How do I export a WhatsApp chat?
Open the WhatsApp chat you want to export. Tap the three dots menu (or contact name) → More → Export chat. Choose 'Include Media' or 'Without Media'. Save the exported .txt file to your device. Upload it to our tool above and click Convert. The PDF or Markdown downloads within seconds.
Does it work with media (images, videos)?
The exported .txt file from WhatsApp includes media filenames but not the actual media files. Our tool references media filenames in the output but doesn't embed them. For media-rich archives, use WhatsApp's own 'Save to Google Drive' export.
Why export WhatsApp chats
Four common reasons. Preserve memories. Family chats, group conversations with friends, special moments — WhatsApp's backups can fail or get lost. Local copies are permanent. Business records. Customer conversations, supplier negotiations, internal team discussions — often required for compliance and audit. Legal documentation. Some legal cases need WhatsApp messages as evidence. PDF exports are court-admissible in many jurisdictions. Migration. Moving from WhatsApp to another platform (Signal, Telegram, etc.)? Export first to preserve history.
How WhatsApp exports work
WhatsApp's built-in export creates a .txt file with all messages in chronological order. Each line includes: date, time, sender, and message text. Media is referenced by filename (the actual media files are in a separate folder if you choose 'Include Media'). Our tool parses the .txt file, extracts sender info, timestamps, and message text, and renders it as a clean PDF or Markdown. The output preserves: sender name, full timestamps, message text, system messages ('X joined', 'Y left'), and media references. For very long chats (10,000+ messages), processing takes a few seconds but works correctly.
Privacy and how we handle your data
We don't log your chat files. We don't store message content. We don't require account creation. When you upload the exported .txt file, we parse it in your browser and generate the PDF or Markdown. The file never lands on our servers.
Are images and videos included?
No — WhatsApp's .txt export references media by filename but doesn't include the actual media files. For media archives, use WhatsApp's 'Save to Google Drive' feature instead.
Does it work on group chats?
Yes — sender names are preserved for each message, so group chats render correctly with attribution.
How long are chats it handles?
Tested with 10,000+ message chats. Very long chats take a few seconds to process.
